Expanded Memory è un progetto che attraversa tutta Italia, frutto dei molti viaggi alla scoperta di luoghi lontani e delle architetture simbolo di molteplici identità e storie locali. Alla fine di un viaggio, si sa, si raccolgono molte immagini, è un processo automatico che ci permette di fermare e di "salvare" un dettaglio, uno scorcio, un ricordo.
Ma a distanza di anni, molto spesso resta per noi impossibile ricordare cosa c'è oltre quel fotogramma, quali sono le "condizioni a contorno", quello che resta escluso dell'immagine, le strade che ci hanno portato lì e tutte le altre sensazioni che un'istantanea non può racchiudere. Cosa c'è al di là, oltre i bordi, dell'immagine e del ricordo che fermiamo? Qualcosa che per noi è probabilmente e irrimediabilmente perso...

In Expanded Memory processo l'immagine attraverso un software di intelligenza artificiale, tramite il quale vado ad espandere il quadro originale oltre i bordi: partendo dallo spazio intero o da un particolare, vado ad esplorare un campo che non esiste ormai più, dove la macchina tenta di costruire un ipotetico completamento, fallendo, non possedendo i dati ormai persi all'interno della mia memoria. Il risultato è però sorprendente: osservando quelle duplicazioni, scopro nuove e monumentali impressioni, vive come l'eco di un passato e di una storia ancora presente e, forse, ancora più potente rispetto ai flebili ricordi.

Expanded Memory is a project that crosses all of Italy, it's the result of many journeys to discover distant places and architectures that symbolize multiple local identities and stories. At the end of a journey, you know, many images are collected, it's an automatic process that allows us to stop and "save" a detail, a glimpse, a memory.
But after many years, it often remains impossible for us to remember what lies beyond that frame, what are the surrounding conditions, what is excluded from the image, the roads that led us there and all the other sensations that a snapshot cannot enclose. What is beyond, beyond the edges, of the image and the memory we stop? Something that for us is probably and irremediably lost ...

In Expanded Memory I process the image through an artificial intelligence software, which expand the original frame beyond the edges: starting from the whole space or from a particular, I explore a field that no longer exists, where the machine tries to build a hypothetical completion, but fails becouse it hasn't got the data that I lost in my memory. The result, however, is surprising: observing those duplications, I discover new and monumental impressions, which are alive as the echo of a past and of a history still present and, perhaps, even more powerful than the faint memories.
